The genus Anaea is a group of medium- to large-sized butterflies within the family Nymphalidae. Commonly known as leafwings, species of Anaea are found primarily in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, from the southern United States through Central America and into South America and the Caribbean. These butterflies are renowned for their remarkable camouflage: when their wings are closed, the undersides closely resemble dead leaves, complete with vein-like markings, mottled coloration, and even apparent leaf stems, providing excellent protection from predators. The upper wing surfaces are often much more colourful, displaying shades of orange, red, brown, purple, or black.
