The genus Siproeta is a group of large, colorful butterflies within the family Nymphalidae. Distributed from the southern United States through Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and much of South America, Siproeta butterflies inhabit forest edges, open woodlands, gardens, parks, roadsides, and other sunny habitats. They are best known for their bold wing patterns, which typically feature striking combinations of black, brown, orange, white, green, or iridescent blue markings. Several species possess slightly elongated hindwings that give rise to the common name swordtails. Adults are strong, active fliers that frequently bask with their wings spread open and readily visit flowers for nectar, as well as fermenting fruit and tree sap.
