The genus Taygetis is a group of medium-sized, predominantly brown butterflies within the family Nymphalidae. Found throughout Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and much of tropical South America, Taygetis butterflies are inhabitants of shaded tropical forests, forest understories, and woodland edges. They are characterized by cryptic wing coloration in shades of brown, gray, and tan, often adorned with bands, wavy lines, and conspicuous eyespots that help camouflage them among dead leaves on the forest floor. Many species rest with their wings closed, where their leaf-like appearance provides excellent protection from predators.
