The genus Hermeuptychia is a group of small, inconspicuous butterflies within the family Nymphalidae and the subfamily Satyrinae. Commonly referred to as brown ringlets, species of Hermeuptychia occur from the southern United States through Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and much of South America. These butterflies are typically brown to gray-brown in coloration and are characterized by a series of small eyespots along the margins of their wings. The eyespots help distract or startle predators and are an important feature for species identification. Hermeuptychia butterflies inhabit grassy areas, forest edges, roadsides, open woodlands, wetlands, and disturbed habitats, where they usually fly low to the ground with a weak, fluttering flight.
