Dicot Skipper Butterflies of Zihuatanejo

GENUS SPICAUDA

Genus Spicauda is a genus of large and conspicuous longtail skippers in the family Hesperiidae, distributed from the southern United States and Mexico through Central America, the Caribbean, and much of South America. Members of this genus are recognized by their elongated hindwing tails, powerful flight, and dark brown to black wings often highlighted by iridescent blue-green scaling or pale markings. Adults are fast, energetic fliers that frequent gardens, forest edges, tropical dry forests, agricultural areas, and open woodland habitats, where they visit a wide variety of flowers for nectar.
