Description

• Moringa oleifera, commonly known as moringa, drumstick tree, or horseradish tree, is a fast-growing, drought-tolerant tree in the family Moringaceae. It has a slender trunk, an open crown, and finely divided, feathery leaves composed of numerous small, oval leaflets. Its fragrant, creamy-white flowers grow in loose clusters, followed by long, narrow, three-sided seed pods that hang from the branches. The leaves, flowers, immature pods, and seeds are used as food in various cultures. The roots have a horseradish-like flavour, but some plant parts require caution because of their bioactive compounds.

Range

• Moringa oleifera is native to the Indian subcontinent and is widely cultivated and naturalized throughout tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. It is cultivated in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and the surrounding area.

Habitat

• Moringa grows in warm, sunny environments, including gardens, farms, roadsides, and dry tropical landscapes. It tolerates drought and a range of soil conditions but grows best in well-drained soils. The tree is sensitive to frost and prolonged waterlogging, making it well suited to the warm climate and seasonal dry periods of coastal Guerrero.
