Description

• Melampodium divaricatum, commonly known as gold medallion flower or butter daisy, is an annual herb in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). It has a branching growth habit, opposite, broadly ovate leaves with toothed margins, and numerous small, daisy-like flower heads with bright yellow ray florets surrounding a yellow central disk. The flowers are produced over an extended period in warm weather, giving the plant a cheerful, golden appearance. It readily establishes from seed and is often found growing in disturbed areas.

Range

• Melampodium divaricatum is native to tropical America, including Mexico and Central America, and has spread to other warm regions. It is native to Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and the surrounding area.

Habitat

• This species grows in sunny, open habitats, including roadsides, vacant lots, pastures, field margins, and disturbed ground. It thrives in warm conditions and can grow in a range of soils, particularly those that drain well. Its ability to produce abundant seeds allows it to colonize open sites and reappear readily after seasonal rains.
