Description
• Melampodium perfoliatum is an annual flowering herb in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). It has branching stems and distinctive opposite leaves whose bases join around the stem, giving the appearance that the stem passes through the leaves. The leaves are generally ovate to triangular, with toothed margins. Its small, daisy-like flower heads have bright yellow ray florets surrounding a yellow central disk. The plant produces dry fruits that aid reproduction by seed.
Range
• Melampodium perfoliatum is native to Mexico and parts of Central America. It is native to Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and the surrounding area.
Habitat
• This species grows in warm, open environments, including seasonally dry tropical vegetation, grasslands, roadsides, agricultural margins, and disturbed ground. It favours sunny locations and is commonly associated with seasonal rainfall, growing actively during the rainy season. Its annual life cycle allows it to complete growth and produce seeds during favourable conditions.
