Tridax procumbens, commonly known as coatbuttons or tridax daisy, is a species of flowering plant in the daisy family. It is best known as a widespread weed and pest plant. The plant bears daisylike yellow-centered white or yellow flowers with three-toothed ray florets. The leaves are toothed and generally arrowhead-shaped. This plant can be found in fields, meadows, croplands, disturbed areas, lawns, and roadsides in areas with tropical or semi-tropical climates. Traditionally, Tridax procumbens has been in use in India for wound healing and as an anticoagulant, antifungal, and insect repellent.
Description
- Tridax mexicana is a flowering herb in the daisy family (Asteraceae). It has branching stems, opposite or alternately arranged leaves with toothed or lobed margins, and small daisy-like flower heads with yellow central florets and pale-coloured ray florets. The fruits are small achenes bearing feathery bristles that help disperse the seeds by wind. As with other members of the genus Tridax, its growth form and flower characteristics help it persist in open, disturbed environments.
Range
- Tridax mexicana occurs in Mexico, including the state of Guerrero and the surrounding Zihuatanejo region. Its distribution is associated with warm areas of the country, although its local abundance varies with habitat and seasonal conditions.
Habitat
- This species grows in open, sunny locations, including seasonally dry vegetation, grasslands, roadsides, field margins and disturbed ground. Around Zihuatanejo, it occurs in open areas and along vegetation edges where well-drained soils, sunlight and seasonal rainfall support its growth.
