Echinopepon bigelovii)is a sprawling perennial deciduous vine that will grow to 1.5 m tall. It blooms small star-shaped flowers. Flowers are fragrant and attract butterflies bees and other pollinators. Produces uniquely shaped fruit covered with spikes.

Description

• Echinopepon is a genus of climbing or trailing vines in the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae). Members of this genus typically have slender stems, tendrils for climbing, and alternate leaves that are often palmately lobed. The plants produce separate male and female flowers, which are generally small and pale-coloured. Their fruits are distinctive, often small, oval or rounded, and covered with soft prickles or bristly projections.

Range

• Echinopepon is native to the Americas, with species occurring primarily in Mexico, Central America, and parts of the southwestern United States. Mexico is an important centre of diversity for the genus. It is native to Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and the surrounding area.

Habitat

• Species of Echinopepon grow in tropical and subtropical habitats, including seasonally dry forests, woodland margins, scrub, thickets, and disturbed areas. The vines climb over shrubs and other vegetation using their tendrils, often growing most actively during the rainy season. They may be found in sunny openings and along forest edges where supporting vegetation is available.
