Glowworm Beetles of Zihuatanejo

FAMILY PHENGODIDAE

Family Phengodidae comprises the glowworm beetles or railroad worms, a fascinating family of beetles in the order Coleoptera found primarily in the Americas, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Members of this family are renowned for their remarkable bioluminescence. The wingless larviform females and larvae possess multiple light-producing organs along the sides of their bodies, creating a series of glowing spots that resemble the illuminated windows of a train, giving rise to the name "railroad worms."
