Family Staphylinidae comprises the rove beetles, the largest family of beetles and one of the largest families of animals on Earth, with more than 65,000 described species worldwide. Rove beetles are found in virtually every terrestrial habitat, including forests, grasslands, wetlands, deserts, caves, shorelines, agricultural fields, and urban environments. They are easily recognized by their elongated bodies and very short wing covers (elytra), which leave much of the flexible abdomen exposed. Many species can raise their abdomen in a scorpion-like posture when disturbed, although they lack a stinger.
