Tribe Preponini is a spectacular group of large brush-footed butterflies (family Nymphalidae) found in the tropical forests of southern Mexico. This tribe includes the leafwings and preponas, butterflies renowned for their powerful flight and brilliant iridescent coloration. Many species display striking blue, green, purple, or orange bands on the upper wing surfaces, while the undersides are often mottled brown and resemble dead leaves, providing excellent camouflage when the butterflies are at rest. Adults are typically canopy dwellers but frequently descend to feed on fermenting fruit, tree sap, and other nutrient-rich sources rather than flowers.
