Metalmark Butterflies of Zihuatanejo

GENUS EMESIS

Genus Emesis is one of the largest and most diverse genera of metalmark butterflies in the family Riodinidae, containing more than 80 species distributed from the southern United States through Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and much of South America. Commonly known as red metalmarks, many species are characterized by orange, reddish, copper, brown, or black wing coloration adorned with intricate bands, spots, and metallic markings. Their slender bodies, rapid flight, and tendency to perch on the undersides of leaves can make them difficult to observe despite being locally common in suitable habitats.
