Subfamily Bruchinae comprises the seed beetles or bean weevils, a specialized group of beetles within the family Chrysomelidae. Despite their common name, they are not true weevils. Bruchinae contains more than 1,500 described species distributed worldwide, with the greatest diversity occurring in tropical and subtropical regions. These beetles are generally small, oval-bodied insects, often brown, black, gray, or mottled, with short wing covers that may leave the tip of the abdomen exposed. Their larvae are highly specialized seed feeders that develop inside the seeds of legumes and other plants, consuming the seed contents as they grow.
