Genus Strymon is one of the largest and most widespread genera of hairstreak butterflies in the family Lycaenidae, comprising dozens of species distributed from Canada and the United States through Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America. These small butterflies are characterized by slender hindwing tails, intricate patterns of lines and spots on the undersides of their wings, and eye-like markings near the tails that create a convincing "false head" used to misdirect predator attacks. Wing coloration varies among species but is typically gray, brown, orange, or bluish, often providing excellent camouflage when the butterflies rest with their wings closed.
